Please Wake Up!
Please Wake Up!
Every day in the US of 2025 has been overstimulating and overwhelming to me. Aside from the ongoing genocides in the world (Palestine & The Congo), there’s just something new and terrifying that the president is trying to push through every single day.
I know the point is to exhaust and overwhelm, so I keep trying to take any chance to recharge that I can: enjoying nature walks, listening to music, working on writing, talking to friends and family; but it is truly horrifying.
Rolling back protections for milk and poultry, cutting down trees that were once federally protected in National Forests, allowing AI to steal from people and rapidly destroy the environment, proclaming himself a king, trying to harm trans people, trying to roll back LGBTQ+ rights and marriages, trying to become a dictator and insisting his rule is law, etc. It all gets to be a bit wearying.
I will continue fighting, however, because the only thing worse than all of these things he’s proposing and trying to do is remain silent. Because as Elie Weisel once said, “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” I’ve never forgotten that. Reading his book Night in college made me weep. To see the way that people were all so willing to strip people of their rights all because of the fact someone was Jewish was ever so sickening to me. But you see it today with the death camps in El Salvador that people are being wrongly sent away to, and this makes me both angry and sad.
I don’t understand how some people are coping or going about with their daily lives. How they can say they “don’t do politics” when our world is so crazy. Your silence isn’t going to save you or the ones that you care about. Your ignorance won’t save you when they come to strip you of your rights or your life. Everyone should be concerned about politics because it something that impacts us all. To simply state that you don’t do politics just tells me that you are willing to reap the benefits of activism or society, but you’re too privileged to care if people have their rights taken from them.
Which I find utterly disgusting along with heartbreaking.
Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to make this world a better place for everyone. I wanted the words “justice and liberty for all” to actually mean something.
Please wake up, America! Right now is the wrong time to be sleeping.
